A Career Built on Purpose and Growth
Over 25 years with Integra LifeSciences, Omar has taken on new challenges, including a transition into environmental health and safety, where he discovered a new sense of purpose.
Your tenure with Integra LifeSciences dates back to 2001. Congratulations on reaching 25 years! Tell us about how your journey began.
Omar: When I began on this path in 2001, I was just looking for a job. Back then, I didn't know much about the medical technology industry or where it would lead. As I learned more about the products and their impact, I began to appreciate that the work we were doing could help restore lives. Over time, Integra gave me opportunities, purpose, and a career path that I never expected.
What has kept you motivated throughout your career?
Omar: In 2018, I had the opportunity to move into the environmental, health and safety area, and that gave me a whole new sense of purpose. In this role, no two days are ever the same. What keeps me engaged is working with people across the organization and learning something new every day. I've also been fortunate to have incredible leaders and mentors who believed in me and supported my growth.
How would you describe your leadership style?
Omar: I believe you can't lead from behind a monitor. If you're asking people to do something, you should be willing to do it yourself. I like being on the floor, talking with colleagues, celebrating small wins, and understanding their challenges. A simple "thank you" or "great job" goes a long way. Building relationships and earning trust are essential, especially in safety, where you're often asking people to embrace change.
Through business resource groups, Integra encourages colleagues to bring their whole selves to work. One of our business resource groups, UNIDOS, celebrates Latin and Hispanic culture through events and networking opportunities for members. How has your Hispanic heritage influenced your work?
Omar: Being bilingual has helped me connect with colleagues from different backgrounds, especially Spanish-speaking team members. Whether visiting our site in Añasco, Puerto Rico or supporting colleagues at our Mansfield site, being able to communicate in the language a colleague is most comfortable using can make safety and compliance requirements clearer and more accessible. It supports trust, helps reduce misunderstandings, and ensures colleagues have the information they need to work safely.
How has being your true self enabled the relationship building that allowed for growth?
Omar: My mentors valued my opinions and encouraged open communication. I've learned that leadership is about creating a platform where people feel comfortable sharing ideas and concerns. That openness creates accountability and drives better outcomes.
Looking back, what does Integra mean to you?
Omar: Integra gave me a roadmap when I didn't have one. It provided opportunities, purpose, and a place where I genuinely enjoy coming to work. I'm grateful for both the big and small things the company has given me, and for the chance to help ensure people go home safely every day. That's what makes the work worthwhile.
