Research Suggests that Active Leptospermum Honey May Be a Viable Treatment for Partial Thickness Burns

Medihoney

Integra LifeSciences’ MediHoney®, an Active Leptospermum Honey (ALH) dressing for wounds and burns, was the chosen treatment for a prospective assessment of MediHoney conducted by collaborating researchers at West Penn Hospital Burn Center and West Virginia University, Department of Psychology. During the study, seven researchers set out to determine the time-to-heal, patient satisfaction and cost of treatment after applying ALH gel to patients with partial thickness facial burns.

Study Treatment

Facial Burn wounds of seven patients, ages 7 – 64 years, were initially evaluated, and then washed with soap and water daily, followed by application of MediHoney Gel. To monitor the healing process of the patients, burns were photographed daily, after washing, and a second group of physicians reviewed the photos, in a blinded fashion, to verify when the wounds were healed.

In addition to the physical assessment of the patients, the psychologists asked each patient to complete a survey to assess overall satisfaction with their outcomes. Finally, the cost of treatment for each patient was calculated, based upon the number of MediHoney tubes used.

Results after ALH Treatment

With MediHoney Gel, partial thickness burns of the face healed in 14 days or less, with the average time-to-heal of 8.1 days.  No patient experienced a burn wound infection and all patients reported overall satisfaction with their MediHoney treatment. The average hospital-based cost of treatment was $26.15 per patient.  The researchers concluded that, based on published data, healing time with ALH is equivalent or better than standard treatment for partial thickness burns. This case series suggests that ALH may be a clinically efficacious and economically viable treatment for partial thickness facial burns. The case series, “A Pilot Study of the Efficacy of Active Leptospermum Honey for the Treatment of Partial-Thickness Facial Burns,” was published in the journal, Advances in Skin and Wound Care  [2]
