Giving Life Back
For years, Jill enjoyed an active lifestyle. A former teacher and banking professional, she loved spending time outdoors and walking her dogs. But gradually, she began noticing changes. Her walking slowed, she started shuffling her feet and simple tasks became more difficult. What initially felt like a normal part of aging soon became a growing concern.
After seeking medical advice, Jill was diagnosed with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), a form of hydrocephalus that can cause problems with walking, balance, memory and daily functioning. Imaging studies revealed an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in her brain, and further testing suggested that treatment could help improve her symptoms.
Dr. Hamilton, her neurosurgeon, recommended shunt treatment to help manage the excess fluid. Jill underwent surgery in the summer of 2024. Within days, she noticed improvements in her mobility and balance, and over time she continued to regain strength, confidence and independence.
Today, Jill walks several kilometers each day with her dog, lives independently and enjoys an active lifestyle. Looking back on her experience, she describes treatment as more than an improvement in symptoms. In her words, it "gave me my life back."
Jill's story highlights the importance of awareness and timely diagnosis. During Hydrocephalus Awareness Month, we are proud to share patient experiences that help educate communities, encourage early recognition and demonstrate the profound difference effective treatment can make for people living with hydrocephalus.
