Nasal Airway Obstruction (NAO) Treatment Options
For all the health factors and lifestyle considerations related to nasal airway obstruction, it's important to consult with your doctor about your NAO and potential remedies. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, there are different treatment options that may be available. The goal of NAO treatment is to relieve or eliminate the symptoms and problems associated with the condition.
Evaluation and diagnosis of your NAO typically includes a complete nasal examination performed by your doctor. This may involve X-rays or endoscopy as well as other scans and imaging exams. Your doctor might also recommend allergy testing.
Treatment for NAO can include medication and breathing strips for temporary relief of symptoms related to the condition, and more permanent options through surgery.
Natural "Home" Remedies
- Breathing strips
- Nasal dialators
- Over-the-counter nasal sprays
Medical Management
- Nasal steroids
- Decongestants
- Antihistamines
Surgery
- May be recommended when temporary treatment methods are not enough to relieve patients' symptoms. Surgical treatment may include septoplasty to correct the shape of the septum, cartilage grafting and other options.
Nasal Dilation
- A minimally invasive procedure designed to temporarily address nasal obstruction1
- Intended to provide increased nasal space and reposition the lower nasal septum
- This procedure can be performed at your doctor's office or at an ambulatory surgical center or hospital
